October 29 2018 Rotoracle

What a great time we had at Rotary this week.  The youth from Ireland, with the Friends Forever Program, were visiting this week.  Robert and Sarah sat at my table and we enjoyed our conversations with them over lunch.  What a wonderful lunch it was; turkey, stuffing, squash, mashed potatoes, soup, salad and a great desert.  Felt more like Thanksgiving than Halloween week.

On a sad note, Ted Speliotis,s mom passed away this week.  Please keep Ted's family in your thoughts and prayers.

Polar Plunge is fast approaching.  Have you considered sponsoring our Rotarians that are doing the big plunge.  Johnie, Mary Beth and Jacki are all taking the big dip to raise funds for Polio with all the other District Clubs.  You can contact them yourselves or you can goto the District site and pledge your support.  Usually we are trying to force the President but this year we are proud to have 3 Danvers Rotarians represented in the District Event.

The Fundraising Raffle is underway for great seats at a Bruins game, an overnight stay in Boston and a great meal in the city as well.  If you have not received your tickets, Becky Kilborn is handing out tickets and collecting funds.  Very important that we have strong participation to make this a success.  Tickets are reasonable and easy to sell.

Have any slightly used or new coats you can contribute to those in need.  Shelly is heading up a Coat Drive again, through the Home for the Deaf and Rotary is again helping with the collection.  Coats can be dropped off at the Y, Salem Five, NorthShore Bank and other locations in town.  Don't have any coats, Shelly is also collecting donations $5 or $10 goes a long wan to purchase coats for those in need.  Collected coats will be distributed local and through the Salvation Army.  Have to tell you the Salvation Army is a great organization.  They helped out with great support for families following the Blast in the Port Area, years ago.  They were wonderful.

Did you purchase tickets for the Comedy Show that we had to cancel.  Hopefully you received your refund for purchased tickets.  If you or anyone you know did not receive a refund please let Jacki know so it can be taken care of.

Dictionary Project ran into a bit of a snag as the dictionaries did not arrive in time for the first distribution date.  Sara will reschedule that school for a future date and it will be announced.  Gary was checking on Monday as to when they would arrive.  This is a great program where we give a dictionary to every third grader in town, to keep as their own.  It is so exciting to see their appreciation for these and the teachers love having each child with their own.  Even with computers in use so much today it is important for children to know how to look up words and learn correct spelling and all the information each word brings to our language.

On Thursday this week the Unsung Hero Awards will be handed out, by the District, at the Sheraton in Wakefield.  Our club nominated Cheryl James and she has been selected.  Danvers Rotary purchased a table and I believe there was one seat available as of Monday's meeting.

This week's program was the visit from the Friends Forever Young Adults from Ireland.  This group of ten teens were quite impressive with their understanding of each other and their concern to help with building friendships with others of other faiths than their own.  The teens spend an entire year with the program.  Some time is spent meeting and working together prior to their visit here in America.  They spend two weeks here in America, learning about each other and spending a great deal of time meeting others and seeing how people get along here.  When they return they will spend the rest of their year meeting and sharing their experiences.  The hope is that they will be the leaders of tomorrow and be able to help create a better understanding of everyone and how people need to work together for peace.  Darren and Bethany were the leaders from Ireland, (returned for a second year), and Sophie was the American leader who drives the group around in a Danvers Ford Van.  Presently there are three groups, one in Maine and two in New Hampshire.  The home base for the program is in Durham New Hampshire with a farm house next door to house the youth.  There are now 1,700 alumni that have been through the program since it's beginning.  Over this past summer there were 5 groups in the program.
The pictures above include a picture of the entire group, a picture of Robert and Sarah presenting some gifts to President Jacki for our hosting them today and the bottom check is President Jacki presenting Chelsea, from Friends Forever, with a check for $2,000 in support of the program.
